Our friendly reception team awaits to welcome you. First of all you will need to complete a medical history form, so we have a full picture of your health and any previous conditions. It is important to complete this as fully as possible. The information on the medical history form will be regularly viewed to ensure we are kept up-to-date with any changes in your health. You will then be taken to one of our dental surgery rooms and your dentist will undertake a thorough examination of your teeth, gums and surrounding areas. The dentist will discuss any concerns you may have, such as toothache or bleeding gums.

The dentist will discuss the findings with you and options available to you. A plan will then be formulated with any recommended treatment, plus how frequently you will need to visit the dentist and the hygienist. It will ensure any dental problems are corrected at the outset and you can achieve healthy teeth and gums going forward. If you need any treatment your dentists will explain to you fully what it entails and will answer any questions you may have. It is really important that there is open communication between the dentist and the patient. We want our patients to feel knowledgeable and completely understand any treatment that is needed.

At your first appointment, we will also carry out an oral cancer check. This cancer can occur in the mouth, where the disease can affect the lips, tongue, cheeks, jaw bone and throat. Sadly more than 1,800 people in the UK lose their life to mouth cancer every year. Many of these deaths could be prevented through a mouth examination by your dentist. If there is anything suspicious, you will be referred to a hospital consultant for further investigation.

These checks really can save lives. We recently had a patient who was at low risk of cancer, as a result of an oral cancer check, unfortunately cancer was diagnosed. Thankfully, due to early diagnosis and successful treatment, the patient has made a full recovery.
